The Passing Through ep is the second release from AUX25, the project of Interchill Records label boss Andrew Ross Collins, and continues the journey started with No Turning Back ep, which was released summer 2021. On this new 5 track ep the mighty Eat Static comes in with a banging remix of the title tune Passing Through.
There’s a theme of travel, with environmental recordings and ambiences from Istanbul, Tokyo, London and Amsterdam featuring in the tracks. The original mix of Passing Through had been set for release on this ep and was then licensed to the second Sub Signals comp, put together by Gaudi for the excellent Dubmission label. A newer version, the City Lights Mix, begins things instead in Amsterdam, suggesting a dreamworld of memories and a view from the window as you move through different spaces.
Eat Static’s remix of Passing Through blasts the track into more upbeat territory with a tight breakbeat, signature detailed production and textures, and the B Movie samples and disembodied voices that have peppered their tracks for the last 30 years.
Back to Cafe Cairo was inspired by the memorable cafe of the same name at the legendary Megadog Festival at the Lizard in Cornwall UK. Some places in space and time make a mark. The track itself is situated in Istanbul, with environmental recordings from different spaces and street scenes. Hand drum from Evan Fraser’s library is the foundation around which the drum and bass beat dips in and out of half time. The track resolves the earlier chaos and meanderings with a melodic ending, much like a cardamom coffee did for us years back at Cafe Cairo.
Scanner takes us through spaces in an imaginary futuristic cityscape, with sounds recorded in Tokyo and London. Double bass and acid lines mirror each other. Some beats and additional sound design are courtesy of the hugely talented producer Erothyme.
The final track Frith is a nostalgic number with dreamy synths and a melody carried by the bass. Less audio collage than the rest of the ep.
